TLI Training at Stamford College

Faiq, Denise, Qinmei, Jack, Cassandra, and I after the Toastmasters meeting, went to TLI training at Stamford College. I drove Faiq, Denise, while Jack drove Qinmei and Cassandra to Stamford College. As we walked out of the college entrance, I diverted and went in our separate cars.

“Is Jack following us?” I asked, feeling pressured to be followed as I was not too sure of the location of the TLI training. Yes he is, confirmed Denise, whom I asked to phone them to confirm…yikes! I expressed a lot of my anxieties (which is my bad habit) of being followed by Jack to Denise and Faiq but tried to restrain myself later.

“There, Stamford College is there,” Denise said. “What? This is the same place where they have their club meetings!” I said, feeling surprised and wondering how I could misread the map so wrongly. “Oh no, where to park?” said me as I did not know where to park. I then turned to my left to what seemed to be like a parking bay. “Oh no, left or straight now?” I asked after turning left. After thinking, I picked the front. Thankfully, there was a nice man at the ticket machine, who asked me politely where we were going and he explained the parking fee which cleared my confusion.

After I have entered into the basement car park, I was driving in a circle, passing the many reserved parking bays for staff, and so was Jack! I was pressured because I was afraid I may lead Jack to nowhere. I then decided to park at the staff parking bay and phew…my anxiety disappeared… Wow, my anxiety was so powerful that it disabled me to pay attention to Denise and Faiq because I kept talking about my worries.

We went into the college and the first thing we did was to have our lunch. “Food is one of our survival needs!” argued Jack, with his plate of food on his hand. The room was hot as it was crowded with many people. I enjoying chatting quite a lot with the members until others’ plates had been depleted while mine was still plentiful. So Qinmei rushed me to finish…for nothing…because the rest decided to eat more!

Then we entered a room where we had our TLI training. We got separated during the Ice Breaker session in groups. “So how can we help a club to be a distinguished club?” asked the TLI coordinator. Qinmei was one of the ones who spoke and said that it depends not only the president but everyone in the team, so she would supervise her the team to ensure quality. With that, she got loud cheers from the crowd. After the Ice Breaker session, we were separated later where we had our own officer training session, then elective session, and finally the getting new members session where I and the members were united again.

Out of this day, I mainly finally learnt the DCP points. Other than that, I learnt some ways of managing as a VPE. Then the rest were general advice like ensuring our club is mutually supportive and positive learning environment, setting goals, having good meetings to attract new members, etc..

At the end of the TLI, we were so happy because all our energy had been drained after a long day. Denise was picked up by her parents while this time I drove Qinmei while Jack drove Faiq. So similar to the beginning when we went to the TLI training, I led Jack. I led him to the way to college but this time without feeling anxious. With that ends our day.

This is exactly what I feel could be improve in our club, not that we don't have the kind of friendships or close ties with each other but I'm hoping that we could engage more in each other's life.

I'm not asking you to interfere my life or something. I am inviting you to be part of my life instead of just come and go in every toastmasters meeting.

The purpose of joining Toastmasters are to improve our communication and speaking skills, aren't you?

If yes. Are you practicing communication and speaking for every chance that you have?

Now, you would be asking why am I 'Communication'?

To communicate to someone, is to have conversation between both of you. Through communication you will ask a lot of questions about each other thus you can understand him/her better.

Let me tell you, we communicate everyday with almost everyone that we bump into. Through communication we convey ideas and knowledge with each other. This will gain friends instead of colleagues or acquaintances or just toastmasters members.

With friends around us,

1) We will feel motivated and we will not feel lonely in our toastmasters journey.

2) You will feel more support and encouragement from the floor when you know all your friends are supporting you!

3) You will not shy in sharing your experience and knowledge thru your speeches as you are only speaking to your friends.

4) Wider network coverage for your friends list. You will have more friends to hang out with.

You might be thinking how ler?

As you know that friends will become good friends only because they know each other better and DEEPER.

How to go deeper? Very simple!
Ask for permission to go deeper..hehe..I mean to find out about each other more.

1) When ever you have a chance to meet any of us..Stop and say HI!
2) When ever you come across a good speech or good jokes..share with us..or even your clubbing reports..Share with me!hehe..
